When choosing tiles for your space, and with so many options available, it can feel a daunting task to take on, especially knowing how much it will impact the style and feel of your home. Two of the most popular choices are those made of porcelain and ceramic, and while they may look similar at a glance, some key differences can influence your final decision.
We’re going to make this process as easy and pain-free as possible, and by the end of this article, you should have a good idea of which kind of tile is set to serve you well for years to come.
What’s the difference?
Material: Both porcelain and ceramic tiles are made from clay. The difference is that porcelain is created and fired at a higher temperature, making it denser, harder, and more durable.
Water absorption: Porcelain tiles are virtually non-porous, consequently they are highly resistant to water and stains. Ceramic tiles, on the other hand, can absorb some moisture. This is something we ask clients to take into consideration, mainly if they have a family with younger children.
Durability: Porcelain’s superior density and hardness make it more resistant to scratches, chips, and cracks. This makes it an excellent choice for high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms. However, should any damage occur, it can be resolved fairly simply.
Appearance: Porcelain tiles can mimic the look of other materials, such as wood, marble, and stone, with remarkable accuracy and attention to detail. Ceramic tiles do come in a wide variety of colours, patterns and finishes, but their appearance is not as versatile.
We’ve compiled a quick checklist for both options for you to work out which tile can suit your home life best…
Choose porcelain if…
• You need a highly durable and stain-resistant tile
• You want a tile that can mimic the look of other materials such as wood
• You’re looking for a long-lasting and low-maintenance option
Choose ceramic if…
• You’re on a budget
• You need a tile that is easy to install
• You prefer a more traditional look
Ultimately, the best choice for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences. Consider factors such as your budget, lifestyle, and the intended use of the tile/area it will be installed.
